Storytelling: My Accidental Journey of Learning!!

Reciting 'Lost and Found: Childhood Memories'

Stories are powerful medium to display ancient traditions, passing cultural heritage to newer generations or inspiring the listeners. Have you ever fallen so deeply by a fantasy stories? Got inspired by any fiction stories? Like Harry Potter? Story telling has always been an art cherished by our forefathers but losing its charm with the easy access of children shows on television and ever busy parents. Not just for personal nourishment, stories today are given credit in management, leadership and other form of communications.

Conversation: A regular habit

‘Humans are better than computers because unlike computers; they cannot be programmed to act in certain manner all the time. That’s why every human being is unique. I always try to understand that inner human being’.

I never had any problems in communicating with people. Over the years, I have spoken with ministers, country ambassadors, Nobel laureate, and people from different parts of the world. My consulting assignments also gave me chance to speak with people from corporate world. From using hand language to a traffic policeman in Istanbul, to discussing food habits with sign language with a deaf and dumb person; it was so interesting to know other person. So, how come I am talking about the storytelling??

Accidental discovery of BSS(Bangalore Storytelling Society)

I was pursing self-designed, ‘Zero Cost MBA(Global Manager for 21st Century)’ project and moved to Bangalore in late 2013 to finish the last phase of this program. While browsing through the internet to have some fun during weekends, I found meetup group of BSS. My most recent memory of storytelling was my summer vacations at my grandparents. Every night, my grandmother used to recite a story for me before I go to bed. Remembering this, I have joined this Meet up group, just to spend some quality time and learn from others. In first two events, I tried to understand what the art of storytelling actually is.

Start of my learning

After two meetups, I realized that I have ability to become a storyteller too. So I took chance and recited a story developed by myself. Since then, I have experimented with many different topics based on theme of storytelling. Most of the stories came out of my own imagination with some real incident and fictional narratives. Regular feedback from experienced storytellers helped me to improve my recitation and developing my own storytelling styles. Started from serious ones in first recitation, I am now known for my fun-loving cheerful short stories.

Every once in a month, I got to know something about love, emotions, inspiration, leadership through the story tellers.Bangalore Story telling society became one of the best places for many people like me to get creative, fall into imagination and cross the line to dive deep into a world, we can just dream of.

It has helped me improving my public speaking skills, connecting more with the audience and what more? Provided me ability to meet some like minded imaginative people.

I am still learning, still experimenting with my styles and imaginations. Though, it is now looking more comfortable. I have merged storytelling in many of my work to improve my communication with others. As a token of gift, you can listen to my latest recitation.
